What to Expect

Visiting a church for the first time can be a bit overwhelming because you don’t know what to expect. We certainly want your visit to First Christian Church, Sumner to be a pleasant and meaningful experience, so we have put together a list of some common questions that visitors have asked. We hope that this list will be helpful for you and that you will experience the Spirit of the Lord in this place of worship. If you have questions, please email Pastor Rochelle Richards or call her at the church office (253) 863-7858.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear?

Wear whatever you feel comfortable wearing. Some people will be dressed casually and others will be wearing dresses or sport coats and ties. It is not unusual to see someone in jeans, tee shirt and tennis shoes sitting next to someone wearing "church clothes." The people of First Christian Church know that God is much more concerned about a person’s heart than the type of clothes they are wearing.

What Kind of People Will I Meet?

You will find a warm and friendly atmosphere at First Christian Church. We are a diverse group of people who come from all walks, ages and stages of life. What we all have in common is a desire to come together as a community and to enjoy each other’s company as we worship together.

Once I arrive, where do I go?

Our Sanctuary is located on the East side of our building (the Wood Ave. side). Limited parking (including two handicapped spaces) is available. If you choose to park here, come through the double doors by the garden and take a left to enter the Sanctuary. More parking is available on the West Side of the building (the Guptil side). If you choose to park here, enter the door facing the parking lot and come down the hall (the bathrooms and nursery are located just off the left of this main hallway). When you reach the end of the hall take a right to enter the Sanctuary. Whichever door you choose to enter, a greeter will be available to answer any questions you have about where to find restrooms, nursery, etc.

What is your Worship service like?

Our service is a blended service meaning that it has traditional components as well as contemporary components blended together. For example, on any given Sunday we may sing traditional hymns and praise music in the same service. We have hymnals available, but all the words to our music are projected on a screen. We cherish our heritage and so many of the prayers and acts of worship are traditional, but we also use creative forms of worship as well. The primary aim of our worship is to praise God and to be open to the Holy Spirit for new insight and guidance.
